Enrichment is a very important part of all animals’ lives. New things happen every day to wild species. In captivity, zookeepers constantly think of new ways to stimulate the minds and bodies of the animals. We maintain a collection of enrichment items that keepers can select from.
The committee collects coins from the Treehouse pond and uses the money to keep our enrichment supply updated and varied. We organize a whole day that focuses on enriching animals in the zoo. We also get together to build new enrichment items.
Our pride and joy is the yearly Enrichment Tree. During the holiday season, we set up a tree with ornaments that have enrichment items written on them. Visitors and staff can take an ornament from the tree and purchase the items requested for a particular animal. It’s a great way for our guests to get involved by donating new and exciting enrichment items for our animals to enjoy.
Whether it’s new sand for a snake, or cereal boxes for the lemurs, it’s all enrichment that we use to keep zoo life interesting and fun! Try to see how many different kinds of enrichment you can find on your next zoo visit!
